Message from the Director

Dear Emeritus College Members,

It has been a pleasure getting to know many of our members, and I look forward to meeting more of you. Thank you for sharing your priorities for the College, including facilitating engagement and strengthening connections within the College and across campus.

The Emeritus College is advancing engagement and connections aligned with our mission statement. The Lunch Colloquiums provide cross-disciplinary intellectual exchange through lectures and discussions. Research conducted by members is supported with research awards and project facilitation. Teaching and mentoring currently include pre-retirement mentoring and student mentoring includes pre-med student mock interviews, and there is interest in developing graduate student mentoring as well. Faculty roles at the university level include Emeritus College voting membership on the University Senate, Faculty Council, Faculty Life, Fringe Benefits, and Policy Review Committees. Community service is exemplified in the MedShare service that bridges the gap between surplus and need in redistributing medical supplies to under-served areas in the US and abroad. The achievements of our members are recognized with Faculty Awards and in newsletter highlights. The EUEC has a distinguished history of leadership in collaboration with other academic institutions in the Association of Retirement Organizations in Higher Education (AROHE) and the Georgia Association of Higher Education Retiree Organizations (GA-HERO).

The July 14 Lunch Colloquium was an engaging and enlightening "HobbyFest." Thanks to all who shared their interests, knowledge, and ideas for connections. Some of the highlights:

  • Ann Rogers shared her expertise in creating her beautiful wardrobe. (There were offers to manage her clothing business.)
  • Darryl Neill quizzed us about his amazing photographs and their locations around campus. (FYI: the go-to answer was the Psychology building.)
  • Lee Pasackow shared her experience playing the flute with a variety of groups. She currently plays with a trio and has invited others to join them.
  • Sallie Freeman’s genealogical expertise was shared via poignant family stories. She researches historical documents (e.g., letters) from societies and websites.
  • Al Padawa shared his creation of mobiles (some are displayed on campus), yard art, and masks. (Stop by Dianne Becht’s office to see one of his beautiful masks). He is inspired by Alexander Calder.
  • Marilynne McKay shared her love for theater and her expertise as a judge for the Suzi Bass Awards (Atlanta's Tony Awards). She recommended attending live theater and using artsatl.org to find out what is showing in Atlanta.
  • Chip Epstein’s guidance about tending orchids with little light and little water was enlightening. (He also shared that those who work in greenhouses live longer.)

Congratulations to the recipients of the Emeritus College Faculty Award of Distinction, Distinguished Service Award, Bianchi-Bugge Award, and the Heilbrun Fellowships (listed below in this newsletter). Please join us for our annual celebration in honor of them on July 28 from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm at the Luce Center in Room 130.

Sincerely,

Kristy

Walking the Campus with Dianne

The odd, but cool-looking, structure discovered on our previous walk is actually a bench/chair and a great place to sit and rest.

The bench was part of the Emory Chairs Project in 2003. “Whisper Chair” was created by Jim Gallucci and is made of bright blue powder-coated steel.

Gallucci, who has worked for several decades as a sculptor based out of Greensboro, North Carolina, has created many benches of playful designs and colors to promote interaction between community members. “Whisper Chair” features two pipes on both ends of the bench that visitors can whisper into and be heard through the other end of the pipe.

This bench can be found in the Joseph McKeon Tull Plaza which is located in the courtyard area behind the Anthropology Building near the Quad.

Since we will be taking a newsletter break until Fall semester, I won't post a photo with a question about its location, but will leave you with a couple of photos of a very handsome friend I encountered last month while bike riding through Lullwater Preserve (see below).

Be ready to explore the campus with me again in September!
