"Math and Marriage – Don't Call the Lawyers Yet"
Pairings of objects from various sets has many applications, for example, pairing applicants with jobs, pairing representatives with districts, pairing wines with foods, and especially pairing people with each other. This idea of pairing has naturally come to be called the marriage problem in mathematics. In this talk I will look at several special cases of the general pairing problem, including optimal pairings from several different points of view. I will limit the mathematics as much as possible and maximize the jokes as much as possible. After all, there is no limit to the number of strange case marriage jokes available.
About Ron Gould:
Ronald J. Gould is Goodrich C. White Professor Emeritus from Emory University. He received his B.S. in mathematics from SUNY Fredonia in 1972, his M.S. in Computer Science in 1978 and Ph.D. in mathematics in 1979 from Western Michigan University, with a specialty in Graph Theory and combinatorial mathematics. In his career his has written over 190 papers and two books, Graph Theory (Dover Pub.) and Mathematics in Games, Sports, and Gambling: The Games People Play, (Taylor Francis Group) which received the American Library Association Choice Award, Outstanding Academic Titles in 2010. He has directed 28 Ph.D. students and 26 MS students and several postdocs.

If you have an emeritus appointment, you may have received an email entitled ”Reminder: You are required to complete an update of your COI Disclosure Profile." As an emeritus faculty member, you are not required to complete or update the COI (Conflict of Interest) profile since you are no longer employed by Emory University.
Apparently, the research office is attempting to catch up with disclosure requirements for all faculty members who are responsible for the design, conduct, and reporting of research. According to Deepika Bhatia, Associate Vice President Research Compliance & Regulatory Affairs, emeritus faculty have active HR accounts, and the HR feed that provides information to the COI system continues to include emeritus faculty members in the disclosure cohort. Hopefully, now that the office of the Senior Vice President for Research has been alerted to the problem, you won’t be asked to complete a COI disclosure in the future. If you receive a request to complete a COI disclosure form, please forward the email to me so I can ask their IT team to manually remove your name from the list.

Twenty years ago, Dr. Jagdish and Mrs. Madhuri Sheth, created a fund to support inviting an outstanding speaker to address Emeritus College members, and others interested attendees. Previous speakers have included former president Jimmy Carter, Natasha Trethewey, Robert Spano, Rosemary Magee, and Zamil Zainaldin.
To mark the 20th Anniversary, the Mind Matters committee invited Dr. Jagdish Sheth, the Charles H. Kellstadt Professor of Goizueta Business School of Marketing, who discussed his journey as an “accidental scholar” from a childhood in Burma (now Myanmar) and India, to his current position as leading theorist about buyer behavior, a sought-after consultant and member of numerous corporate boards, and a philanthropist. If you missed his inspiring presentation, it will be posted on our website in a week or two.

MedShare - Volunteer Opportunity | |

We are looking for additional volunteers to join us at MedShare!
The schedule for the EUEC service project at MedShare has shifted to the second Thursday of each month. The next dates are May 9 and June 13. Sessions are from 1:00 to 4:00 pm with a snack break at the midpoint. Most of us bring snacks to share. The address is 3240 Clifton Springs Rd, Decatur GA 30034.
We are required to register in advance using the instructions below. Please use the link specific to the Emory University Emeritus group even if you are not officially affiliated with Emory. Feel free to invite friends who may be interested.
Thank you for your interest. We each have complex commitments and will not be able to participate each month, but hopefully we can have a half dozen or so for each session.

David Boyd and the Valdosta State Retirees Association have put together a program for us that promises to be informative and entertaining. They are also working on organizing a campus tour after the meeting. We will have the opportunity to enjoy many activities and events in and around the Valdosta area in the evening and on Saturday. Bring your colleagues, family, friends...your travel buddies …and plan to stay for the weekend and take advantage of Valdosta’s hospitality. The opening of the Summer Theatre season and the annual First Friday downtown celebration will be kicking off June 7-8 — just a small taste of what Valdosta has to offer!

Celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month with the Emory Jazz Combos in a free outdoor performance.
Under the direction of Emory's acclaimed Jazz Artist Affiliates, the Emory Jazz Combos give students an opportunity to explore many facets of improvisation in a small group setting. Usually consisting of five to eight members, the primary focus of these groups is on gaining experience in improvising and soloing for each participant.

Join Rose Library on Thursday, April 25 for a mixed media theatrical production produced by Garry Yates with Addae Moon in celebration of artist Benny Andrews, followed by a discussion about the art of Benny Andrews. This event is in conjunction with Rose Library’s “At the Crossroads with Benny Andrews, Flannery O’Connor, and Alice Walker” exhibition in the Schatten Gallery.
"Benny Andrews: The Man From Plainview" delves into the extraordinary life and artistic journey of Benny Andrews, showcasing how his experiences and views about "folk," activism, family life, introduction to various art forms, and his passion for storytelling profoundly influenced his art. Through an innovative mixed media performance incorporating collages of music, images, sound effects, dialogue, and vocal blues riffs, the show immerses viewers in the world that surrounded Andrews' thoughts and feelings about the world he grew up in. From his humble beginnings in Plainview to his groundbreaking contributions to the nation’s art scene, audiences are taken on an exciting journey through the lens of an artist whose work impacted the art establishment and the world of social justice.

The EUSO and University Chorus join forces to present Verdi’s Requiem.
The EUSO will also premiere a new orchestral work as part of the Composer Commission Project: EUSO @ 100, highlighting the work of female-identifying BIPOC composers. This project—now in its third year—has developed as a collaboration between the Schwartz-Artist-in-Residence program, EUSO, and Emory composition faculty to bring to Emory’s campus emerging composers from backgrounds currently underrepresented within American classical music. For the 2024 presentation, EUSO premieres a new orchestral work by this year's project winner, Johanny Navarro.

Did anyone recognize the Emory Recycle Center during our last walk? As I mentioned before, it is somewhat hidden, but once you find it, you realize it's a wonderful thing to have on campus. The Recycle Center is located at 868 Peavine Creek Drive. It's beyond the Chappell Park baseball field and the Visual Arts Building, but just before the Michael Kaminsky Intramural Park on Peavine Creek Drive.
Anyone in the general Emory community can take glass, newspapers and more, to be recycled -- the drop-off is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
